What it is

The record behind the representation.

A seat on a board or a check from an investor is a representation. The record either supports it or it doesn’t.

An executive background investigation tests what a principal has represented — about their ventures, their disputes, their regulators and their wealth — against court records, regulatory and sanctions sources, corporate filings, asset records and media.

It sits between a standard background investigation and full due diligence on a company: the depth of an investor-grade inquiry, focused on the person. For family offices, see family office investigations.

FAQ

Executive background investigations, explained.

What is an executive background investigation?
An executive background investigation is an executive-level inquiry into a principal, board candidate, investor or counterparty — litigation, regulatory, sanctions, business history, assets and media — for boards, investors, lenders and family principals. OnTrial delivers it as an analyst-verified, source-cited report.
Is this employment screening?
No. OnTrial does not perform employment screening. Executive background investigations are for boards, investors, lenders, family principals and counsel evaluating a principal or counterparty in a governance, investment or transaction decision.
What does an executive background investigation cover?
Litigation, judgments and liens; regulatory actions and sanctions; business history and affiliated entities; assets; and adverse media and online footprint. It is built on background investigations with county-level court research, and on Background 360 where social and field corroboration are warranted.
How long does an executive background investigation take?
Background 360 returns in 4–5 business days standard (rush 3–4). When a company and its principals are examined together in a transaction, due diligence applies: Level 1 — Comprehensive Screening covers one company plus up to three principals (additional principals can be added): identity, criminal, civil, watchlist, regulatory, and adverse-media screening with analyst verification. It requires the subject's signed authorization and averages a 48-hour turnaround.
Do you need the subject's consent?
It depends on the purpose. Where the Fair Credit Reporting Act applies, the subject's signed authorization is obtained, and Level 1 due diligence always requires it. Every search runs under DPPA permissible-purpose controls, and OnTrial is FCRA, GLBA, CCPA and California SB 1454 compliant.
Will the subject know they are being investigated?
Research is conducted discreetly through records and open sources. Where a signed authorization is required, the subject will know an inquiry is underway. Your case manager will confirm what the chosen scope requires before work begins.
